The Closure of TPY North Mississippi

Dearest Students and Friends of the The Peoples Yoga Studio on North Mississippi:

It is with a heavy heart I let you know that The Peoples Yoga studio on North Mississippi will be closing on Sunday, October 27th. We’re so thankful for the warm and dedicated practice you all have shared with us over the past three years. This has been a difficult decision and we are deeply sad to leave this beautiful space we all have built together. I am thankful that we will be able to move more that half of the scheduled classes over to our Killingsworth location which has now expanded to include three practice studios.

I know this decision may be surprising to students, but it is a choice we have been struggling with for over a year.

Personally, the opening of the North studio and the following years corresponded with some of the hardest personal challenges of my life. A mystery illness left me unable to function by the Fall 2017, and at the same time my daughter faced a life or death health crisis that left me commuting between Los Angeles and Portland for the next 8 months. Out of necessity for my health, I radically transformed the way I live and work and spaciousness for myself, my family, and my staff is of utmost importance. Success doesn’t mean much if it kills me/us in the process or takes our attention significantly away from relating to those we love.

Finally, it’s become clear that the monthly financial overhead and the energetic resources that our North studio needs and deserves are more than the studio and staff have the capacity to bear. As we all know Portland is changing (has changed). Over the past 5 years, two of our studio locations have been sold to out-of-state investors who do not operate with the same sense of relationship as our local landlords did. Our relationships with both were untenable and detrimental to the long run financial health of each location. In the case of SE Belmont, we were able to move to a location owned by a local landlord. And, in the case of Mississippi we have decided to close.

……………………

We recognize change isn’t easy and that often we choose where we practice based on convenience and proximity to our home. But, if it’s the teachers that have kept you coming back to People’s, we enthusiastically welcome you to our NE and SE locations to practice with them there.

If you are a regular student at Mississippi who has practiced there six or more times in the last two months, we have already put a free class on your account both in gratitude for being a part of our Mississippi community and as an invitation to check out SE Hawthorne and NE Killingsworth. Come yourself or share the class with a friend.

Members who are dedicated to Mississippi, we will honor early cancellation of memberships. But, we will need you to email contactus@thepeoplesyoga.org to process those cancellations.

Mississippi students who use class cards, we are happy to offer you a one time three month extension to your class cards to give you move time to check out our other studios since we recognize they may not be convenient for you.  Please email contactus@thepeoplesyoga.org to request that extension.

…………………….

We hope the last few weeks in this beautiful space can be a big celebration of the practice we have shared here and the practice that will continue to inform and shape our lives. Please, come celebrate and share in movement and learning with your favorite instructors for the next three weeks.

That hope aside, we’ve got room for all your feelings, so feel free to connect with us with hopes, frustrations and questions at contactus@thepeoplesyoga.org. Below check out the list of classes which will be moving directly to NE Killingsworth.

It’s really been a joy and an honor to share this beautiful space and this rich, challenging practice with you all in the Mississippi neighborhood. I hope that the lessons we’ve each learned in this space will continue to be a source of inspiration and nourishment.

Yours in Gratitude,

Michelle
